About Us

The Budget Office is a division within the Department of Administration and has offices in the Department of Administration building in Providence, R.I. In accordance with Rhode Island General Law 35-3-1, the Budget Officer is appointed by the Director of Administration, with the approval of the Governor. The Budget Officer is responsible, under the supervision of the Governor, for preparing the annual state budget, assembling, correlating, and revising the estimates of revenues and requests for appropriations of the various departments of the state government. As of July 2006, the Budget Office has a staff of nineteen employees, as shown on our organizational chart. In each year since 1993, the Budget Office has been the recipient of the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award from the Government Finance Officers Association. To receive this award, Rhode Island’s budget documents must satisfy nationally recognized guidelines for effective budget presentation. These guidelines are designed to assess how well Rhode Island’s budget serves as a policy document, a financial plan, an operations guide and a communications device.
